The name “Solus,” derived from the Latin word for “alone,” embodies a sense of peaceful solitude—much like the serene moments of fly fishing, where one finds harmony and connection with the great outdoors.
At Solus Custom Rodcrafters, I strive to use 100% made in the USA components, supporting local craftsmanship and delivering the highest quality products when possible. However, if there is a specific rod blank or other component you want me to use, I will do my best to accommodate.

How It Started
I got my first fly tying kit when I was 8, and really began fly fishing in earnest in my teens. While in the Air Force, I was fortunate to travel and fish in many interesting places. After retiring in 2006, I joined Project Healing Waters (PHW—Healing America’s Veterans through the therapeutic art of fly fishing), first as a participant, and then a volunteer. It was with PHW I first gained an interest in building fly rods. I read and watched everything I could to learn the art of rod making, and became the lead fly rod building instructor for the Fredericksburg PHW Program. After leading several classes, I wanted to take my craft to the next level. Gary Loomis’ (president of North Fork Composites and a world leader and innovator in rod blank manufacturing—IYKYK) certification program offered me that next step. After completing their requirements, I am now part of North Fork Composite’s Certified Builders Program.
